Before you start weight training there are a couple of books you should read. Arnold Schwarzenegger's classic bible of bodybuilding, The New Encyclopedia of Modern Bodybuilding, includes training advice, motivation, techniques, historical information, and anatomical charts, along with new sections on diet and nutrition and the treatment and prevention of injury.

Another great reference on proper bodybuilding is Strength Training Anatomy. It contains full-color, detailed, anatomical drawings of exercises that target every major muscle group, along with full descriptions of how to perform them.
The illustrations graphically depict both the muscles and the bones, with variations showing how the exercises can be modified to isolate specific muscles. When you are ready to begin building your home gym, use Men's Health Home Workout Bible as your reference.

There are all sorts of tools out there to help you gain muscles - from weights to supplements. Something every home gym should have is a good set of dumbbells. These weights will let you work many, if not all, of your upper torso muscles.
